Verse
Psalm 47:1–2 (ESV)
Clap your hands, all peoples!
Shout to God with loud songs of joy!
For the LORD, the Most High, is to be feared,
a great king over all the earth.
Meditation
This psalm opens with a summons—not to a few, but to all peoples. The praise of God is not reserved for Israel alone, but echoes out to every nation, tribe, and tongue. Joy is not quiet here—it claps, it shouts, it sings, for the LORD reigns. He is Most High—exalted above every ruler, every idol, every pretender to power. And yet, He is not distant. He invites joyful reverence, for He is a great King over all the earth. His rule is not oppressive, but just. His glory is not cold, but gladness for His people. The psalm points forward to Christ, the ascended Lord, seated at the right hand of the Father, who reigns even now over heaven and earth. In Him, the call to praise becomes a call to gather—a foretaste of the joy that will fill the nations when every knee bows and every tongue confesses that Jesus Christ is Lord.
New Testament
Revelation 7:9–10 (ESV)
After this I looked, and behold, a great multitude that no one could number, from every nation… crying out with a loud voice, “Salvation belongs to our God who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb!”
Old Testament
Malachi 1:11 (ESV)
For from the rising of the sun to its setting My name will be great among the nations, and in every place incense will be offered to My name… says the LORD of hosts.
Collect
O Lord, Most High, King over all the earth, stir in us holy joy and grant that all nations may know Your salvation and sing Your praise, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.
