Finding Christ in the Old Testament
Proverbs 8:22 – "The LORD possessed me at the beginning of his work, the first of his acts of old."
Proverbs 8 presents Wisdom as speaking, describing its role in creation and its intimate relationship with God. While some interpret this passage as a poetic personification of wisdom, the early Church Fathers and the New Testament writers saw a deeper, Christological significance. This verse, along with the surrounding passage, finds its fulfillment in Jesus Christ, who is the eternal Wisdom of God (1 Corinthians 1:24). The Hebrew word translated as “possessed” (קָנָנִי – qanani) can also mean "brought forth" or "acquired," leading to significant theological discussion. However, within the broader biblical witness, Christ is not a created being but the eternal Son, through whom all things were made (John 1:1-3, Colossians 1:15-17).
This passage foreshadows Christ’s preexistence and His role in creation. Just as Wisdom was present before the foundation of the world, Christ, the Logos, was with God from eternity and was active in creation. Unlike human wisdom, which is flawed and limited, Christ is the perfect, divine Wisdom in whom all the treasures of knowledge are hidden (Colossians 2:3). He is the wisdom that calls out to humanity, inviting all to turn from folly and walk in the fear of the Lord, which is the beginning of true wisdom. This verse, then, is not about a mere attribute of God but about the eternal Son who took on flesh to bring salvation to those who would heed His voice.
Devotional: Christ, the Wisdom of God
Many seek wisdom in philosophy, science, or human experience, yet Scripture teaches that true wisdom is found in a Person—Jesus Christ. From eternity, He was with the Father, delighting in His creation and working out the plan of redemption. The world’s wisdom is fleeting and often deceptive, but the wisdom of Christ is eternal and leads to life. If you long for true understanding, do not search for it in the shifting sands of human reasoning. Instead, look to Jesus, in whom are hidden all the riches of wisdom and knowledge. His words are life, His ways are truth, and His wisdom leads to salvation. Will you heed His call and walk in the way of wisdom?
