Daily Devotion for March 12 - Titus 2:11 - 14

Verse

Titus 2:11-14"For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people, training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age, waiting for our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, who gave Himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to purify for Himself a people for His own possession who are zealous for good works."

Meditation

God’s grace is not merely a passive gift but an active force that transforms the lives of those who receive it. The same grace that brings salvation also trains us, shaping our hearts to turn from sin and live in righteousness. Christianity is not a momentary decision but a lifelong formation under grace. We do not remain as we were, bound to ungodliness and worldly passions. Rather, Christ has redeemed us to be His own—His purified people, set apart and zealous for good works. This is not a call to self-righteous striving but to Spirit-wrought sanctification. We live in the present age with self-control and godliness, not because we fear condemnation, but because we eagerly await the return of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ. His first coming was for our redemption; His second coming is our hope. The Christian life, then, is one of both gratitude and anticipation—redeemed by grace, purified by grace, and awaiting the fulfillment of grace when Christ returns in glory.

Old Testament

Deuteronomy 7:6"For you are a people holy to the Lord your God. The Lord your God has chosen you to be a people for His treasured possession, out of all the peoples who are on the face of the earth."

The Lord has always called a people to be His own, not because of their merit, but because of His steadfast love and faithfulness.

Collect

O Lord, whose grace has appeared for our salvation, train our hearts to renounce all ungodliness and to live in righteousness, that, being purified as Your own possession, we may await with joy the coming of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

Hymn Verse

Certainly! Here is the complete text of verse 1 of "Come, Thou Long-Expected Jesus" from Lutheran Service Book (LSB) 338:

"Come, Thou long-expected Jesus,
Born to set Thy people free;
From our fears and sins release us,
Let us find our rest in Thee.
Israel’s strength and consolation,
Hope of all the earth Thou art,
Dear desire of every nation,
Joy of every longing heart."

(LSB 338:1)
