Daily Devotion for March 2 - Mark 1:12 - 13

Verse

Mark 1:12–13"The Spirit immediately drove Him out into the wilderness. And He was in the wilderness forty days, being tempted by Satan. And He was with the wild animals, and the angels were ministering to Him."

Meditation

Jesus does not enter the wilderness by accident—He is sent there by the Spirit. Just as Israel wandered for forty years and failed, Christ is tested for forty days and prevails. The devil comes, seeking to turn the Son away from the Father’s will, but Jesus stands firm. His hunger does not drive Him to despair, His isolation does not lead Him to compromise, and His suffering does not weaken His obedience. Instead, He endures, fulfilling what Adam could not, proving Himself the true and faithful Son. Even in the wild, surrounded by beasts, He is not alone. The angels serve Him, testifying that though He is humbled in the flesh, He remains the Lord of heaven. His victory in the wilderness is the first step toward the greater victory of the cross, where He will finally crush the tempter’s head. And because He overcame, He now strengthens us in our own trials. When we are weak, He sustains us; when we are tempted, He intercedes for us. In Him, we have a refuge that cannot be shaken.

Old Testament

Psalm 91:11–12"For He will command His angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways. On their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone."

The Psalmist emphasizes the Lord’s protection over His faithful ones. Similarly, Christ, though enduring temptation, is not abandoned. The Father sends His angels to minister to Him, just as He upholds all who trust in Him.

Collect

O Lord, who led Your Son into the wilderness to triumph over the tempter, strengthen us in our trials, that we may cling to Your Word, resist the devil, and trust in Your faithful care, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

Hymn Verse

“Jesus, refuge of the weary,
Blest Redeemer, whom we love,
Fountain in life's desert dreary,
Savior from the world above:
Often have Your eyes, offended,
Gazed upon the sinner's fall;
Yet upon the cross extended,

You have borne the pain of all.” (LSB 423:1
