Daily Devotion for March 1 - Matthew 4:8 - 11

 Matthew 4:8–11"Again, the devil took Him to a very high mountain and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. And he said to Him, 'All these I will give You, if You will fall down and worship me.' Then Jesus said to him, 'Be gone, Satan! For it is written, "You shall worship the Lord your God and Him only shall you serve."' Then the devil left Him, and behold, angels came and were ministering to Him."

Meditation

Satan offers Jesus the kingdoms of the world, tempting Him to seize power without the cross, offering what is not his to give!   It is the same lie told since Eden—that glory can be won apart from obedience, that the crown need not come through suffering. But where Adam failed, Christ prevails; where Israel faltered in the wilderness, Christ stands firm. He does not bargain with the enemy, nor does He entertain his schemes. Instead, He wields the Word of God as His defense, rebuking Satan and upholding the truth that only God is to be worshiped and served. This moment is not just Christ’s victory—it is ours as well. Because He remained faithful in temptation, we have a perfect righteousness that covers our failures. Because He rejected the easy path, He walked the harder road to the cross, where He won for us a kingdom not of this world, but one that will never pass away. And just as the angels ministered to Him after His battle, so too does He now send His messengers to strengthen and sustain us in our trials.

Old Testament

Deuteronomy 6:13–14"It is the Lord your God you shall fear. Him you shall serve and by His name you shall swear. You shall not go after other gods, the gods of the peoples who are around you."

The command to serve and worship God alone finds its perfect fulfillment in Christ, who resists the temptation to bow before another. His obedience secures our redemption.

Collect

O Lord, whose Son triumphed over the tempter in the wilderness, strengthen us by Your Word, that we may resist the lies of the devil, cling to Your truth, and worship You alone, who live and reign with the Son and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

Hymn Verse

“Jesus, refuge of the weary,
Blest Redeemer, whom we love,
Fountain in life's desert dreary,
Savior from the world above:
Often have Your eyes, offended,
Gazed upon the sinner's fall;
Yet upon the cross extended,
You have borne the pain of all.”
(LSB 423:1)
