Devotion of the Day

Verse
Psalm 5:3 (ESV) — “O Lord, in the morning you hear my voice; in the morning I prepare a sacrifice for you and watch.”

Meditation
Psalm 5 places prayer at the very start of the day. The psalmist does not rush ahead of God or wait to see how the day unfolds before speaking. He brings his voice to the Lord early and then waits with expectation. Prayer here is not a ritual to complete, but a posture of trust. To “watch” is to remain attentive, confident that God hears and responds according to His will. Morning often tempts us to move quickly into action, carrying worries and plans without pause. This verse teaches a better order. We speak first to God, placing the day before Him, and then we wait—not passively, but faithfully. The one who prays in the morning learns to live the day under God’s care, alert to His guidance and secure in His hearing.

New Testament Verse
Mark 1:35 (ESV) — “And rising very early in the morning, while it was still dark, he departed and went out to a desolate place, and there he prayed.”

Old Testament Verse
Exodus 33:7 (ESV) — “Everyone who sought the Lord would go out to the tent of meeting.”

Collect
O Lord, who hears the prayers of Your people, receive our voice at the break of this day. Teach us to wait upon You with trust and to walk attentively under Your care, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Hymn Verse
A mighty fortress is our God,
A trusty shield and weapon;
He helps us free from every need
That hath us now o’ertaken.
The old evil foe
Now means deadly woe;
Deep guile and great might
Are his dread arms in fight;
On earth is not his equal.
(TLH 262, verse 1)
