Verse
Psalm 18:6 – “In my distress I called upon the LORD; to my God I cried for help. From His temple He heard my voice, and my cry to Him reached His ears.”
Meditation
The psalmist speaks from a place of desperation and deliverance. Trouble pressed in, but he did not remain silent. He called upon the LORD—his covenant God—not in vain repetition but with the cry of one who knows the One who saves. And God answered. Not with indifference or delay, but with attention and power. This verse reminds us that prayer is not a ritual but a lifeline. God hears. God responds. No cry of His children goes unheard, for His ears are inclined to their distress, and His help comes swiftly, in His time and in His way.
New Testament
Romans 10:13 – “For everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”
The apostolic witness affirms the promise of the psalm: those who cry to the Lord in faith are not forsaken, but saved.
Collect
O Lord our God, who hears the cries of Your people and delivers them in their distress, grant us the courage to call upon You in every trouble, and the faith to wait for Your salvation; through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.
Hymn Verse
“From depths of woe I cry to Thee,
In trial and tribulation;
Bend down Thy gracious ear to me,
Lord, hear my supplication.
If Thou rememberest every sin,
Who then could heaven ever win
Or stand before Thy presence?”
— From Depths of Woe I Cry to Thee – LSB 607:1
