Daily Devotion for April 3 - James 4:7 - 10

Verse

James 4:7-10“Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. Be wretched and mourn and weep. Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to gloom. Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you.”

Meditation

True strength is found in submission to God. The world tempts with self-sufficiency, but Scripture calls us to humility. To resist the devil is not to fight by our own power, but to stand firm in God's truth. As we draw near to Him in repentance, He draws near to us with mercy. The call to weep over sin is not a call to despair but to true contrition that leads to grace. God exalts the lowly, lifting them from the depths of sorrow to the joy of His presence.

Old Testament

Joel 2:12-13“Yet even now,” declares the Lord, “return to me with all your heart, with fasting, with weeping, and with mourning; and rend your hearts and not your garments.” Return to the Lord your God, for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love.”

The prophet echoes James' call to repentance, showing that God welcomes the contrite and lifts up those who return to Him in humility.

Collect

O Lord of mercy, who exalts the humble and draws near to the contrite, grant us true repentance, that in submitting to You, we may resist the devil and stand firm in Your grace. Cleanse our hearts, purify our minds, and lift us from sorrow to the joy of Your presence; through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

Hymn Verse

"Jesus, sinners doth receive;
Oh, may all this saying ponder
Who in sin’s delusions live
And from God and heaven wander!
Here is hope for all who grieve:
Jesus sinners doth receive."
