Verse
1 Thessalonians 5:16–18 – “Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.”
Meditation
Here, the apostle gives a triad of holy habits for the Christian life: joy, prayer, and thanksgiving. These are not occasional moods, but continual expressions of faith formed by the Spirit. Rejoicing is rooted not in our comfort, but in Christ’s victory. Prayer is not reserved for moments of crisis, but is the ongoing breath of the soul. Thanksgiving does not depend on favorable conditions but arises from trust in the God who works all things for good. In these things, the will of God is not hidden or mysterious—it is revealed in Christ Jesus, who rejoiced, prayed, and gave thanks on our behalf and now strengthens us to do the same.
Old Testament
Habakkuk 3:17–18 – “Though the fig tree should not blossom... yet I will rejoice in the LORD; I will take joy in the God of my salvation.”
Even in desolation, the prophet teaches joy rooted not in circumstance but in the steadfastness of God.
Collect
O God of joy and steadfast mercy, grant us grace to rejoice always, to pray without ceasing, and to give thanks in every trial, that our lives may bear witness to Your goodness and reflect the mind of Christ; through the same Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.
Hymn Verse
“Now thank we all our God
With hearts and hands and voices,
Who wondrous things has done,
In whom His world rejoices;
Who from our mothers’ arms
Has blest us on our way
With countless gifts of love
And still is ours today.”
