Finding Christ in the Old Testament
Ezekiel 37:24–25 – "My servant David shall be king over them, and they shall all have one shepherd. They shall walk in my rules and be careful to obey my statutes. They shall dwell in the land that I gave to my servant Jacob, where your fathers lived. They and their children and their children’s children shall dwell there forever, and David my servant shall be their prince forever."
Ezekiel’s prophecy points to a coming King, a descendant of David, who will reign over God’s people forever. This cannot refer to the historical David, who had long been dead, but to the greater David—Jesus Christ, the promised Messiah. Christ is the Good Shepherd (John 10:11, 14) who gathers His flock and leads them in righteousness. Unlike the failed kings of Israel, who led the people into idolatry and exile, Jesus is the perfect King who reigns in truth and justice. His kingdom is not merely an earthly restoration but an eternal reign, fulfilling God's covenant promises. The land inheritance promised here finds its ultimate fulfillment not in physical geography, but in the new creation, where God’s people will dwell securely under Christ’s rule forever (Revelation 21:3–4). Jesus, as the Son of David, reigns now at the right hand of the Father, and when He returns, His kingdom will be fully realized. This passage reassures us that in Christ, we are under the care of the true Shepherd-King, whose reign is eternal, whose justice is perfect, and whose presence with His people will never end.
Devotional: The Shepherd Who Reigns
The longing for a good and faithful ruler is as old as humanity itself. Sin has tainted even the best leaders, but Ezekiel gives us hope: a King is coming, one who will reign forever in righteousness. Jesus, the true Son of David, is that King. He does not lead by force or deception but as the Good Shepherd, who lays down His life for His sheep. Under His reign, we are not just ruled—we are loved, protected, and guided in righteousness. This prophecy reminds us that Christ's kingdom is not temporary or unstable; it is eternal, unshakable, and filled with peace. When the world feels chaotic and unjust, we look to the Shepherd-King who has already secured our future. His reign has begun, and one day, we will dwell with Him forever. Let this promise strengthen your faith today: no matter the turmoil around you, your King reigns, and His kingdom will never end.
