Daily Devotion for March 9 - James 1:19 - 21

Verse

James 1:19-21"Know this, my beloved brothers: let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger; for the anger of man does not produce the righteousness of God. Therefore put away all filthiness and rampant wickedness and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls."

Meditation

The tongue is swift, but wisdom is slow. James, like a father instructing his children, exhorts Christians to bridle their speech and temper their hearts. Anger, especially the quick and self-righteous kind, does not bring about the righteousness that God desires. Instead, it fuels bitterness, discord, and division. The Christian, however, is called to silence and humility—quick to listen, slow to speak, and even slower to anger. Such meekness is not weakness; it is the strength of the Spirit subduing the impulses of the flesh. The heart that receives God's Word in humility becomes fertile soil, yielding the fruit of righteousness. Anger, on the other hand, is a barren field. To put away filthiness and wickedness is to make room for the implanted Word, the Gospel of Jesus Christ, which alone saves and sanctifies. The one who walks humbly, speaks carefully, and receives the Word with meekness reflects the very character of Christ. Such a life is pleasing to God and a witness to His grace.

Old Testament

Proverbs 17:27-28"Whoever restrains his words has knowledge, and he who has a cool spirit is a man of understanding. Even a fool who keeps silent is considered wise; when he closes his lips, he is deemed intelligent."

The wisdom of silence and measured speech is affirmed by the sage, for a guarded tongue and a calm spirit demonstrate the fruit of godly wisdom.

Collect

O Lord, who have implanted Your Word within our hearts, grant us grace to be slow to speak, slow to anger, and quick to hear, that we may reflect Your righteousness in humility and peace, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

Hymn Verse

“Take my voice and let me sing
Always, only for my King;
Take my lips and let them be
Filled with messages from Thee.”
(LSB 783:3)
