Verse
Mark 2:19–20 – "And Jesus said to them, ‘Can the wedding guests fast while the bridegroom is with them? As long as they have the bridegroom with them, they cannot fast. The days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast in that day.’"
Meditation
Jesus declares Himself the Bridegroom, the fulfillment of God’s covenant love for His people. His presence among them is a time of joy, not mourning—like a wedding feast where fasting would be unthinkable. Yet He hints at what is to come: the day when He will be taken away, when sorrow will replace celebration. His words point to the cross, where He, the Bridegroom, will lay down His life for His bride, the Church. This is the great mystery of salvation—joy through sorrow, life through death, victory through suffering. After His departure, fasting and mourning will return, not as despair, but as a longing for His presence, a discipline that trains the heart to seek Him more deeply. Yet even in fasting, we do not grieve as those without hope. For the Bridegroom who was taken away has risen, and He will return for His bride, ushering in the eternal wedding feast that will never end.
Old Testament
Hosea 2:19–20 – "And I will betroth you to Me forever. I will betroth you to Me in righteousness and in justice, in steadfast love and in mercy. I will betroth you to Me in faithfulness. And you shall know the Lord."
The Lord speaks of His covenant love for His people in the imagery of marriage. Jesus, the true Bridegroom, fulfills this promise, binding His Church to Himself in faithfulness and love.
Collect
O Lord, our Bridegroom, who in love laid down Your life for Your bride, grant that we may cling to You in faith, rejoicing in Your presence and longing for the day of Your return, that we may feast with You in everlasting joy, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.
Hymn Verse
“The Bridegroom soon will call us,
Come to the wedding feast.
May slumber not befall us
Nor watchfulness decrease.
May all our lamps be burning
With oil enough and more
That we, with Him returning,
May find an open door.” (LSB 514:1)
