Verse
1 Peter 1:13-16 – "Therefore, preparing your minds for action, and being sober-minded, set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ. As obedient children, do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance, but as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, since it is written, 'You shall be holy, for I am holy.'"
Meditation
The Christian life is not one of passive waiting but of active preparation. Peter exhorts believers to set their hope fully on the grace of Christ’s return, a grace already revealed in part but to be made complete at His coming. This hope calls for a disciplined mind, sober and watchful, refusing to be shaped by former sinful desires. Holiness is not optional—it is the mark of the redeemed. Just as Israel was called to be set apart from the nations, so too are those in Christ. This holiness is not self-generated but flows from the One who calls. We are not holy to earn salvation but because salvation has already been given. To be holy is to reflect the nature of our holy God, living in a way that testifies to His righteousness and grace.
Old Testament
Leviticus 11:44 – "For I am the Lord your God. Consecrate yourselves therefore, and be holy, for I am holy."
The Lord’s command to Israel echoes in Peter’s words: holiness is the calling of those whom God has set apart.
Collect
O Lord, who has called us to be Your holy people, grant that we may set our hope fully on the grace of Christ, shaping our lives not by former passions but by the holiness that You have given, that we may walk in obedience and reflect Your righteousness, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.
Hymn Verse
"Take my life and let it be
Consecrated, Lord, to Thee;
Take my moments and my days,
Let them flow in ceaseless praise." (LSB 783:1)
