Verse
"Blessed is the one whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered. Blessed is the man against whom the Lord counts no iniquity, and in whose spirit there is no deceit." (Psalm 32:1–2)
Meditation
These verses declare the profound joy and blessing of receiving God's forgiveness. To have one’s sins forgiven and covered by the Lord’s mercy is to experience true freedom and peace. The psalmist highlights that this blessedness is not based on human effort but on God’s grace, as He does not count iniquity against those who come to Him in repentance. Moreover, the absence of deceit in one’s spirit points to an honest relationship with God, where confession leads to restoration. For us, this passage invites us to reflect on the gift of forgiveness through Christ, who bore our sins so we might stand blameless before God. It assures us that when we humbly acknowledge our sin, He is faithful to forgive and cleanse us. In this assurance, we find a blessing that surpasses all worldly joys: the freedom of a heart made right with God.
Gospel
"And when Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, 'Son, your sins are forgiven.'” (Mark 2:5)
This verse from Mark aligns with the psalmist’s proclamation of the joy and blessedness of forgiveness. The paralytic receives not only physical healing but also the forgiveness of his sins, demonstrating the power and grace of God to remove iniquity. Both passages emphasize the life-giving freedom and peace that come through the forgiveness of sins.
Collect
O Lord, blessed are those whose transgressions are forgiven and whose sins are covered. Grant us true repentance and faith, that we may rejoice in Your mercy and walk in the freedom of Your righteousness, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.
Hymn Verse
The King of Love my Shepherd is,
Whose goodness faileth never;
I nothing lack if I am His
And He is mine forever.
Where streams of living water flow,
My ransomed soul He leadeth
And, where the verdant pastures grow,
With food celestial feedeth.
