Daily Devotion for February 20 - Psalm 26:8

 Verse

"O Lord, I love the habitation of your house and the place where your glory dwells." (Psalm 26:8)

Meditation

In this verse, the psalmist expresses a deep affection for the presence of God, specifically the place where He reveals His glory. The “habitation of your house” is a reference to the sanctuary, the place where God’s people gather to worship and where His holiness dwells. This longing for God’s presence reflects a heart that finds true joy and rest in fellowship with the Lord. The psalmist’s love for God’s house is not about the physical structure but the recognition that it is the place where God’s glory is made manifest. For the believer today, this can remind us of the importance of corporate worship and the deep joy found in entering God’s presence, whether in a church building or in the company of fellow believers. The verse calls us to cultivate a love for God’s presence, seeking His glory above all else, and allowing that love to shape our priorities and actions. The house of the Lord, where His glory dwells, becomes a place of refuge, joy, and renewal.

Gospel

"For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I among them." (Matthew 18:20)

This verse from Matthew reflects the psalmist's love for the presence of God in His dwelling place. Just as the psalmist cherishes the place where God's glory dwells, Jesus assures His followers that His presence is with them when they gather in His name. Both passages express the joy and reverence of experiencing the Lord's nearness in worship and fellowship.

Collect

O Lord, we love the habitation of Your house and the place where Your glory dwells. Cleanse our hearts and draw us near to You, that we may find refuge in Your presence and rejoice in Your holiness; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

Hymn Verse

"O worship the King all glorious above,
O gratefully sing His power and His love;
Our shield and defender, the Ancient of Days,
Pavilioned in splendor, and girded with praise."

O Worship the King" (LSB 804)
