Daily Devotion for February 15 - Psalm 22:9 - 11

 Verse

"Yet you are he who took me from the womb; you made me trust you at my mother’s breasts. On you was I cast from my birth, and from my mother’s womb you have been my God. Be not far from me, for trouble is near, and there is none to help." (Psalm 22:9–11)

Meditation

The psalmist here expresses a deep dependence on God from the earliest moments of life. The psalmist reflects on the Lord’s sustaining care, acknowledging that even as a newborn, God was the source of trust and protection. This lifelong relationship underscores God’s intimate involvement with His people, shaping and sustaining them from birth. Yet, in the midst of this confidence, there is a plea for God’s nearness in a time of distress. The psalmist feels the weight of trouble and recognizes the inadequacy of any human help. This passage teaches us to lean on the Lord, not only because of His past faithfulness but also because He alone is sufficient in times of trial. When trouble surrounds us, we can cry out to God with the same confidence, knowing that the One who has been faithful since the beginning will not abandon us now.

Gospel

"And he said to them, 'Why were you looking for me? Did you not know that I must be in my Father’s house?'" (Luke 2:49)

This verse from Luke echoes the psalmist’s lifelong dependence on God and trust in His presence. Just as the psalmist acknowledges God’s care and guidance from birth, Jesus, even as a child, expresses His profound connection to His heavenly Father, who has been His refuge and guide. Both passages reflect a deep, abiding relationship with God that sustains in times of trouble and need.

Collect

O Lord, who has been our God from our mother’s womb, do not be far from us in our time of need. Strengthen us with Your presence and deliver us, for we trust in You as our constant help; through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

Hymn Verse

"Children of the Heavenly Father
Safely in His bosom gather;
Nestling bird nor star in heaven
Such a refuge e'er was given.
God His own doth tend and nourish,
In His holy courts they flourish;
From all evil things He spares them,
In His mighty arms He bears them."

"Children of the Heavenly Father" (LSB 725)
